I have always been good friends with David since he transferred to Thirsk Rotary Club from Rotherham R C in 1996 after he and Verna retired to Thirsk. His transfer to Thirsk was a indeed a lucky day for us as he was never far from the front of the queue when a task needed doing. Age, nor health issues, ever dulled his enthusiasm for Rotary activities and he truly lived by our maxim ' Service before self'. He was even out at Christmas acting as one of Santa's elves at Thirsk Garden Centre in our Grotto, which is no mean feat at 85! I used to joke with him that he had to stop trying out the world's health systems, as he developed a penchant for foreign hospitals! He and Verna's home in Sowerby was always a welcoming place to visit, with Verna invariably gardening, which seemed to be passion for them both, and a look at their garden bore witness to this. Many a quiet coffee or cold beer was enjoyed whilst we chatted in the conservatory. Following dear Verna's death David adjusted stoically to his new life in Rowan Court but always treasured his frequent trips to France to visit Judith & Rod as well as holidaying with Mark and other members of the family. He leaves a hole in our Club which cannot be filled, but he will always be remembered with warmth by his many colleagues and friends for his humour and quick wit. RIP Rotarian David
